Rugby Positions From A Coach Perspective

The positions of players in rugby are determined based on the shape and size and most importantly the temperament of the player. The positions of players in rugby also heavily depend on the age, physical traits and grade of the player. As a result, it is important for us to know the rugby positions.

Forwards: There are around eight forwards in a team. These forwards need to be stronger, heavier and bigger players in the team. They are collectively known as ‘pack’.
The Front row: This is the props and the hooker position, in which the props are number 1 and 3 whereas the hooker is number 2.
Second Row: This rugby position contains the lock. These locks need to strong and tall so that they are able to go and have forward power to push the opposition away from the ball.
Back Row: This position consists of number eight position and the flankers and is involved in moves when a team wins the ball and break quickly if the opposition wins the ball.

These were some of the most common rugby positions. There are other positions such as fly half, scrum half, centers and others.
