Rugby Positions From A Coach Perspective

The positions of players in rugby are determined based on the shape and size and most importantly the temperament of the player. The positions of players in rugby also heavily depend on the age, physical traits and grade of the player. As a result, it is important for us to know the rugby positions.

Forwards: There are around eight forwards in a team. These forwards need to be stronger, heavier and bigger players in the team. They are collectively known as ‘pack’.
The Front row: This is the props and the hooker position, in which the props are number 1 and 3 whereas the hooker is number 2.
Second Row: This rugby position contains the lock. These locks need to strong and tall so that they are able to go and have forward power to push the opposition away from the ball.
Back Row: This position consists of number eight position and the flankers and is involved in moves when a team wins the ball and break quickly if the opposition wins the ball.

These were some of the most common rugby positions. There are other positions such as fly half, scrum half, centers and others.

Around twenty nations compete over a month in the host nation hosting the Rugby World Cup. There are around two stages in the Rugby World Cup. These include the group and the knockout. The teams are divided into a group of four pools consisting five nations each.

The Rugby World Cup Ltd (RWCL) organizes the tournaments of the Rugby World Cup. The hosts are selected based on the votes by the IRB member nations wherein the voting procedure is managed by a team of independent auditors. The process of voting is kept secret. However, until now the world cup has been organized in nations, where rugby is highly popular.

New Zealand won the latest rugby world cup of 2011. Due to the increasing popularity of the sport, the rugby world is always a treat to watch.

Not Releasing:In this, the players fail to let the ball go after a tackle.
Not in straight: This includes not putting the ball straight down through the tunnel when the players are in a scrum or lineout.
Gands in the ruck: In this, the players play the ball with their hands. The players play the ball with their hands when it is on the ground and when the ruck is formed.
Knock-on: This mostly includes fumbling the ball forward.
Obstruction: This is the mistake, which many players make in rugby. In this, the players run behind one of their teammates when they have the possession of the ball.

The league and the union are the two types of rugby widely played. The rules and regulations of the both these types of rugby are different. The leagues as well as the union have their own games and their own championships. The Rugby union football is most commonly referred to as ‘rugby’.

Rugby is played between two teams of either around 13-15 players an exception is done of seven players where seven players are accepted for a form of a game known as ‘rugby sevens’. A single game of rugby lasts for around eighty minutes, which involves a break of ten minutes. The sport is a full contact sport and doesn’t involve any kind of head protection or padded uniforms. This makes the players more vulnerable to the injuries and accidents than the other sports. However, gum shields are mandatory to prevent damage to teeth and tongue.

The game is mostly played in rugby’s official uniform, made up of shorts and collared jerseys.
